Chamber of Commerce for Individuals with DisAbilities
Inspiration and History

But what have the disabled ever done? From the beginning of time, people with disabilities, or those close to them, have played an incredible role in the development of society as we know it today. To have a disability does not mean that you are not able to contribute to your fellow man. The disabled have spurred some of the world's greatest inventions and developments.

The first proven typewriter to work was created by Pellegrino Turri in 1808 for his blind friend, Countess Carolina Fantoni da Fivizzono, to help her write letters. When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he was attempting to convert speech to a visual representation in order to accommodate his wife, who had a hearing loss.

Only in the last 40 years has a usable choice for telephone access by deaf people become available. At that time, deaf individuals began purchasing and adapting old Western Union Tele-typewriters (TTY's) that only enabled communication with each other. Communication between TTY users and standard telephone users has only become widely available in the last few years due to the establishment of Americans with Disabilities Act that mandated state relay services. Like the typewriter, transfer and extension of text messaging took a long time to develop and could have taken even longer. One of the lead engineers of the original Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), the predecessor of the Internet, was accustomed to using the TTY device because he communicated with his hearing-impaired wife.

Some of the world's most revered people have been admired for their leadership, musical talent, literary skills and intelligence. Early leaders Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar had epilepsy and Franklin Roosevelt had polio. Great musicians such as Beethoven (deaf), Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder (blind) and Itzak Perlman (polio), and one of the world's greatest theoretical physicists, Steven Hawking (ALS - Lou Gehrig's disease), were all disabled.

As we start to look at people for they are and what they contribute, we begin to lose sight of the disability and see only the ability. From inventions to poetry to literature and music, the disabled have made major contributions.

If you are disabled, don't let that disability keep you from reaching your destiny. And if you are a business owner, don't let the next great invention or development slip away because of your unwillingness to hire the qualified disabled job applicant.

TECHNICAL TIPS

BROWSER VIEW

The Chamber sites are best viewed with the latest version of Internet Explorer, but will view almost identically in any other browser.

SCREEN SIZE
Most Chamber sites are designed for screen resolutions of either an 800x600 pixels or 640x480 pixels. On a 640x480 screen, the graphics and text will appear larger but you will see less at one time without scrolling. On an 800x600 screen, you should be able to see all of the main screens without scrolling. The sites will resize according to what your resolution is set to. To change your screen resolution, look for "Display Properties" or "Monitors & Sound" in your Control Panel.

FONT SIZE
The Chamber sites are best viewed when your default font is set to "Medium" on Internet Explorer or Times New Roman size 12 on Netscape Navigator. If your font size is set significantly larger or smaller than these, you may experience some visible distortion.

DOWNLOADS & PLUG-INS

The Chamber sites may possibly utilize free downloads or plug-ins to enhance your experience. Several of the most common plug-ins are listed below. Please note that not all of our sites may require these plug-ins and that each of these can be downloaded free of charge.

Microsoft Power Point Viewer This download is for users who don't have Microsoft PowerPoint and allows them to view PowerPoint 95, 97, 2000, and 2002 presentations.

Adobe Acrobat Reader formats documents so that they print more accurately.

RealOne Player streams audio and video files so that visitors can enjoy media experiences without waiting for the entire file to download.

Shockwave allows visitors to experience interactive multimedia-including audio, video and animations-through a Web browser.

QuickTime enables visitors to watch videos or view QuickTime VRs - "virtual reality" panoramic scenes.
